Asylum and Society
An exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by David Beales

David Beales invites the viewer into a world usually denied to the general public, a world of corridors and locked doors, of distress and tenderness. The stories of his first hand experience give a unique insight into life within psychiatric healthcare and demands answers to the questions, what is asylum? what is society? and where do we feel safe and valued? His images plant the viewer directly into a ward, hospital or street scene and detail the truthful brutality and compassion of life when you are most vulnerable.

'I am 54 years old. I have been painting and drawing since I was a child. When I was 21 I was admitted to Farnborough Psychiatric Unit and was in and out of different hospitals for nearly 20 years, until I was discharged into the community as part of the 'Care in the Community' programme in the early 90's. I have been able to paint events from the hospital, the supported houses and the community that has been my home since I left. I decided to confront the issue of prejudice against the mentally ill by using informative illustration and captions to raise awareness.'

Launch event coincides with Bethlem Annual Sunfayre, a fantastic day out for all the family. Throughout the afternoon there will be live music, craft stalls, games and children's entertainment. The Bethelm Gallery and the Bethlem Archives and Museum will be opening their doors to all so please come and join us!
